  • Cellulitis  is a common, potentially serious bacterial skin infection. The affected skin appears swollen and red and is typically painful and warm to the touch.
  • Cellulitis usually affects the skin on the lower legs, but it can occur in the face, arms and other areas. It occurs when a crack or break in your skin allows bacteria to enter.

Causes-
  • Cellulitis occurs when bacteria, most commonly streptococcus and staphylococcus, enter through a crack or break in your skin. The incidence of a more serious staphylococcus infection called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is increasing.
  • Although cellulitis can occur anywhere on your body, the most common location is the lower leg. Bacteria are most likely to enter disrupted areas of skin, such as where you've had recent surgery, cuts, puncture wounds, an ulcer, athlete's foot or dermatitis.
  • Animal bites can cause cellulitis. Bacteria can also enter through areas of dry, flaky skin or swollen skin.
Symptoms-
Possible signs and symptoms of cellulitis, which usually occur on one side of the body, include:
  • Red area of skin that tends to expand
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Warmth
  • Fever
  • Red spots
  • Blisters
  • Skin dimpling

A boil is a skin  infection that starts in a hair  follicle or oil gland. At first, the skin turns red in the area of the infection, and a tender lump develops. After four to seven days, the lump starts turning white as pus collects under the skin.

The most common places for boils to appear are on the face, neck, armpits, shoulders, and buttocks.

Causes of Boils-
  • Most boils are caused by a germ (staphylococcal bacteria). This germ enters the body through tiny nicks or cuts in the skin or can travel down the hair to the follicle.
  • These health problems make people more susceptible to skin infections:
  • Diabetes Problems with the immune system
  • Poor nutrition
  • Poor hygiene
  • Exposure to harsh chemicals that irritate the skin
Symptoms of Boils-
  • A boil starts as a hard, red, painful lump usually about half an inch in size. Over the next few days, the lump becomes softer, larger, and more painful. Soon a pocket of pus forms on the top of the boil. These are the signs of a severe infection:
  • The skin around the boil becomes infected. It turns red, painful, warm, and swollen.
  • More boils may appear around the original one.
  • A fever may develop.
  • Lymph nodes may become swollen.

      Preventing Boils-
      • Help prevent boils by following these guidelines:
      • Carefully wash clothes, bedding, and towels of a family member who is infected with boils.
      • Clean and treat minor skin wounds.
      • Practice good personal hygiene.
      • Stay as healthy as possible.

      Commonly indicated Homeopathic remedies:

Belladonna: This remedy is most often indicated for the initiatory symptoms of abscess. The parts swell rapidly, become bright red, there is intense throbbing which is painful, pus develops speedily the swelling increases and the redness radiates.

Hepar Sulphur : It is great homeopathic remedy for suppurations where the pus is not decomposed. It suits especially lymphatic, phlegmatic individuals. Excessive sensitiveness of the parts is a leading indication.

Mercurius: Differing from Belladonna, from Hepar, and especially from Silicea is Mercurius, which is one of our good remedies in abscess. It comes in after Belladonna, when pus has formed. It favors the formation of pus especially in the lower potencies, and is especially indicated in glandular abscesses; the pus is greenish in tint, and quite thin and fluid.

Silicea: This remedy is indicated where the suppuration continues and the wound refuses to heal, no matter where the suppurative process is located; the pus is apt to be thin, watery and the process is sluggish and indolent one. Under Silicea the suppurative process takes on a healthy action, the pus becomes benign, granulation appear.

An abscess is a collection of pus. Pus is a thick fluid that usually contains white blood cells, dead tissue and germs (bacteria).

A skin abscess may appear on any part of the body. However, abscesses most commonly develop on the back, face, chest, or buttocks. Skin abscesses can also appear in areas of hair growth, such as the underarms or groin.

      Common causes of an abscess-
      • An abscess may be caused by a variety of common conditions including:
      • Foreign object trapped inside you, such as a thorn or piece of metal that breaks off in your skin; also, retained foreign body fragments after previous attempted removal
      • Infected diverticulum in the large intestine can cause a diverticular abscess
      • Infection at the site of previous surgery (perioperative wound contamination)
      • Skin infection may result in an abscess
      • Tooth infection may progress to a periodontal abscess
      • Wound or trauma to the skin, especially a puncture wound, may cause an abscess
Symptoms: An abscess may accompany symptoms affecting the skin including:
      • Oozing or drainage of a fluid from the skin
      • Pain on or around a lump
      • Peeling or ulcerating skin
      • Redness, warmth or swelling
The most common types of abscess are:

Skin abscess, caused by infections that result in pus collecting in the skin. These can include infections from bacteria (most commonly Staphylococcus), infections in the hair follicle (folliculitis ) boils, or minor wounds or injuries that become infected. Skin abscesses can form anywhere on the body.

Breast abscess: A breast abscess is a painful, pus-filled lump under the skin of the breast. Breast abscesses can be a complication of mastitis, which is an infection of the breast. These lumps are more common among females who are lactating.Jul 23, 2020

Dental abscess, which can form in the center of a tooth (the pulp) and spread to the root or bone structures that hold the tooth. A tooth can become infected when bacteria get in through an opening, such as a cavity caused by tooth decay or an injury that results in a broken, chipped or cracked tooth .

Abdominal abscess, which can be near or inside abdominal organs such as the liver, pancreas or kidneys. Causes of abdominal abscess include infections, burst organs (such as appendix or ovary), and inflammatory bowel disease  (IBD).

Amebic liver abscess, a type caused by amebiasis, an intestinal infection that can spread to the liver. The infection results from the intestinal parasite Entamoeba histolytica, which is spread through food and water contaminated with feces containing the parasite. Amebiasis is most common in crowded populations with poor sanitation.

Anorectal abscess, located in or near the anus or rectum, most commonly caused by sexually transmitted diseases , infection of anal fissures, blocked glands, or trauma to the area.

Bartholin abscess (or cyst), which can form in the Bartholin glands located on each side of the opening of the vagina. The duct from the gland can become blocked, causing fluid to build up over time, potentially leading to an infection and formation of an abscess.

Brain abscess, typically the result of a bacterial or fungal infection  in part of the brain. The pressure created by the abscess can cause serious brain issues, including seizures , loss of muscle function, and language problems. A brain abscess is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Epidural abscess, a rare occurrence caused by an infection of the area between the meninges (the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord) and the bones of the skull or spine. If inside the skull, it is an intracranial epidural abscess. If in the spine, it is a spinal epidural abscess, which is the most common type of epidural abscess.

Peritonsillar abscess, a potentially life-threatening complication of tonsillitis an infection of the tonsils. Most often, this infection is caused by the bacteria group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, the same bacteria that cause strep throat.  However, peritonsillar abscess is rare due to the use of antibiotics to quickly and effectively treat tonsillitis.

Pyogenic liver abscess, which is simply an area on the liver that produces pus. This can result from many types of abdominal infection, an infection of the tubes that drain bile, or trauma to the liver.

Spinal cord abscess, a very rare result of an infection inside the spine. When it does occur, it is most often a complication of an epidural abscess.

      Commonly indicated Homeopathic remedies:

Belladonna: This remedy is most often indicated for the initiatory symptoms of abscess. The parts swell rapidly, become bright red, there is intense throbbing which is painful, pus develops speedily the swelling increases and the redness radiates.

Under Silicea the suppurative process takes on a healthy action, the pus becomes benign, granulation appear.

A carbuncle is a red, swollen, and painful cluster of boils that are connected to each other under the skin . A boil (or furuncle) is an infection of a hair that has a small collection of pus (called an abscess ) under the skin. Usually single, a carbuncle is most likely to occur on a hairy area of the body such as the back or nape of the neck. But a carbuncle also can develop in other areas of the body such as the buttocks, thighs, groin, and armpits.

      Risk Factors for Carbuncles-
      • Older age, obesity , poor hygiene, and poor overall health are associated with carbuncles. Other risk factors for carbuncles include:
      • Chronic skin conditions, which damage the skin's protective barrier
      • Diabetes
      • Kidney disease
      • Liver  disease
      • Any condition or treatment that weakens the immune system
      Symptoms of Carbuncles-
      • The boils that collect to form carbuncles usually start as red, painful bumps. The carbuncle fills with pus and develops white or yellow tips that weep, ooze, or crust. Over a period of several days, many untreated carbuncles rupture, discharging a creamy white or pink fluid.
      • Superficial carbuncles -- which have multiple openings on the skin's surface -- are less likely to leave a deep scar. Deep carbuncles are more likely to cause significant scarring.
      • Other carbuncle symptoms include fever, fatigue , and a feeling of general sickness. Swelling may occur in nearby tissue and lymph nodes, especially lymph nodes in the neck, armpit or groin.
      Complications of Carbuncles-
      • Sometimes, carbuncles are caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA ) bacteria, and require treatment with potent prescription antibiotics if the lesions are not drained properly.
      • In rare cases, bacteria from a carbuncle can escape into the bloodstream and cause serious complications, including sepsis and infections in other parts of the body such as the lung ,bones, joints, heart , blood ,and central nervous system.
      • Sepsis  is an overwhelming infection of the body that is a medical emergency and can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms include chills, a spiking fever, rapid heart rate, and a feeling of being extremely ill.

      Homeopathic treatment for carbuncles-

Belladonna: This remedy is one of the best homeopathic remedy for early stages of carbuncle before pus formation. Redness of skin, hot, throbbing, and tender with intense pain and fever. Erysipelous around carbuncle. Pain aggravated by touch.
